    Privacy Policy – Maliban Street

    Effective for: Users in New Zealand, Australia, and other countries where the app is available.

    1. Who we are

    Maliban Street ("we", "our") is a community app for the Sri Lankan community (initially in New Zealand and Australia). This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the Maliban Street mobile app and related services.

    2. Information we collect

    • Account and profile: Phone number (for login), name, email, country, region, and profile picture you provide.
    • Content you create: Posts (text and images), comments, event listings, and directory entries.
    • Technical and usage: Device type, app version, and push notification tokens so we can send you notifications you have opted into.
    • Reports: If you report a post, we store the report (reason, details) and related identifiers for moderation and safety.

    We do not collect your precise location. We do not sell your personal information.

    3. How we collect it

    • From you: When you sign up, edit your profile, create or edit posts, comment, add events or directory entries, or report content.
    • Automatically: Push token when you enable notifications; basic technical data necessary to run the app.

    4. How we use your information

    • To create and manage your account and profile.
    • To show your content (posts, comments, profile) to other users in line with the app's features.
    • To run the app (events, directory, notifications you opted into).
    • To moderate content and respond to reports (including following up on reported content and enforcing our terms).
    • To improve the app and fix issues.
    • To comply with law and protect safety and rights.

    5. Who we share data with (third parties)

    We use service providers that process data on our behalf:

    • Hosting and database: To run our servers and store account and content data.
    • Storage (e.g. cloud storage): To store images you upload (e.g. profile and post images).
    • Push notifications: To deliver notifications (e.g. Expo Push Notification service).

    We require these providers to protect your data in line with this policy and only use it to provide the service. We do not sell or rent your data to advertisers or data brokers.

    We may disclose data if required by law (e.g. court order, government request) or to protect safety, rights, or property.

    6. Data retention and deletion

    We keep your account and content while your account is active.

    If you delete your account (via the in-app "Delete account" option), we will delete or anonymise your personal data and content in line with our internal retention schedule, except where we must keep data for legal or safety reasons (e.g. handling reports, legal claims).

    Some data (e.g. backups, logs) may be retained for a limited period before deletion.

    7. Your rights and choices

    • Access and correction: You can view and edit your profile and content in the app.
    • Delete account: You can delete your account at any time from within the app (e.g. Profile/Settings). After deletion, we will process your data as described in section 6.
    • Revoke consent: You can turn off push notifications in your device settings and in the app's notification preferences.
    • Complaints: You may contact us (see section 11) to ask about your data or to complain. In Australia you may also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC). In New Zealand you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC). If we expand to the EU/EEA, you may have the right to complain to a data protection authority.

    8. Security

    We use industry-standard measures (including HTTPS and secure storage) to protect your data. No system is completely secure; we will notify you of a breach where required by law.

    9. Children

    The app is not directed at children under 13 (or higher age where required). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has given us data, contact us and we will delete it.

    10. Changes to this policy

    We may update this policy. We will post the new version on our website and update the "Last updated" date. For material changes, we may notify you in the app or by email. Continued use after the update means you accept the revised policy.
